Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Healing bodywork in Howell, MI
The lymphatic system touches every part of our body. When we think of wellness, we think lymphatics. Our lymphatic system plays a major role in our over-all health: It maintains healthy fluid levels in the body, removes cellular waste, debris and foreign substances, supports our immune system, and transports long chain fatty acids. As our lymph fluid moves along its journey through its vessels and nodes, it's also becoming thicker to be returned as plasma. Pretty cool if you ask me!
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) focuses on the lymphatic system. This work requires a much different style of touch from traditional massage due to the location of the lymphatic system in the body, and the purpose of the work. Where massage brings blood to the area the massage therapist is working, the focus of MLD is not to bring any fluid in and only move fluid out. The majority of the lymphatic system sits above the musculature of our body which requires the technique to be "lighter" than traditional massage. What is wonderful about this technique is that our nervous system innervates the lymphatic system, which means this work is very relaxing to receive.
